A notification pinged and he clicked on it immediately. It was a photo-
graph posted by someone at Pituffik Space Base. No caption. No explana-
tion. No diplomatic protocol or formal announcement or any of the cour-
tesies that nations extended when planting symbols of presence on foreign
soil. Just a flag. Planted in frozen ground. Stars and stripes snapping in
Arctic wind like a statement that needed no words.
He stared at the image for a full minute before the anger arrived.
Then it came all at once. Hot and sharp and personal in a way that ex-
ceeded politics. That flag was on his land. His people's land. Ground that
Inuit hunters had walked for four thousand years before any European na-
tion existed. Ground that his grandparents had hunted seal on. Ground
that Denmark had claimed through colonial convenience and America
