Description / Story

SAUYIN YANAYI

Description

What happens when a young woman begins to believe that the greatest obstacle standing between her and success is the very father whose approval she desperately wants? For Salma, every attempt to prove herself ends in disappointment. She struggles with school, lives under the weight of constant comparison, and watches helplessly as her father's affection seems to belong more naturally to the children he considers successful. Yet Salma has not completely given up. Deep inside her is a quiet hope that one day, something will change.

Far away from Salma's family struggles, another household is hiding a secret far more dangerous than anyone could imagine. In Abuja, Kande accidentally discovers what Momy has been desperately trying to conceal, a terrifying secret involving Salman and a black snake. Meanwhile, in Gurbi, fear descends upon an entire community when armed kidnappers enter the town and abduct one of its residents. Three different worlds, three different struggles, and one story that is only beginning to reveal how deeply their lives may be connected.

Summary

Sauyin Yanayi opens with Salma, a young woman trapped between expectations, disappointment, and an education system she desperately struggles to understand. Her inability to grasp her studies has become a source of constant conflict at home, especially with Abba, whose determination to see all his children educated leaves little room for excuses. Salma does not lack the desire to make him proud. What hurts her is that, despite her efforts, she continually feels as though nothing she does is enough. Her mother's attempts to comfort her offer temporary relief, but they also expose a deeper disagreement between Salma's parents about what her future should look like.

The tension inside Salma's home becomes even more painful when Abba overhears Hajiya suggesting that marriage might be a better path for their daughter. His reaction makes his position unmistakable. He refuses to allow Salma to abandon her education, while warning her against becoming involved in romance. His harsh words leave Salma caught between two opposing expectations, and once again she retreats into silence. Behind the family arguments lies a question that could eventually reshape Salma's life: will she remain the daughter who can never seem to satisfy her father, or will circumstances give her an opportunity to prove everyone wrong?

The story then moves to an entirely different environment in Abuja, where Kande finds herself terrified after discovering something hidden beneath Salman’s bed. What initially appears to be an ordinary task quickly turns into a nightmare when she encounters a huge black snake. Her discovery is followed by an even more disturbing revelation: Momy seems to know far more about the strange circumstances surrounding Salman than Kande ever imagined. Salman himself suffers from a mysterious condition that causes violent episodes, leaving previous wives unable to remain with him. The question becomes increasingly difficult to ignore. Is Salman's condition simply an illness, or is something more sinister happening behind closed doors?

In Gurbi, another kind of danger threatens an ordinary family. Rumours of kidnappers entering the town become reality when gunfire breaks out and residents scramble for safety. Nanah and Inna fear for their loved ones as armed men move through the community, eventually abducting a wealthy businessman. The incident exposes the vulnerability of the villagers and raises an unsettling possibility that the kidnappers could return. While Inna worries about the safety of her family, Auta sees the situation differently, secretly hoping that the danger might give his family a reason to leave the village and move to the city.

The second episode expands the story beyond Nigeria, introducing Salman in Dubai and Faruk Galadima in Canada. Salman is wealthy, handsome, constantly travelling, and repeatedly pursued by women who are attracted to his appearance and status. Yet behind his confidence is a complicated personal history and a condition that has already destroyed several attempts at marriage. Faruk, meanwhile, has built a successful life through music, technology, and determination, but remains deeply attached to his mother. When a friend announces his return to Nigeria after years away, the story opens another door. With Salma facing pressure at home, Salman carrying a troubling secret, Gurbi living under the threat of abduction, and Faruk preparing to reconnect with Nigeria, the true meaning of Sauyin Yanayi begins to emerge.

Genre and Setting

Sauyin Yanayi blends family drama, romance, suspense, mystery, social drama, and contemporary Hausa fiction. Rather than following one character alone, the novel introduces several storylines that unfold across different environments and social backgrounds.

The story moves from Dubantu in Hadejia, Jigawa State, where Salma's family struggles with education, parental expectations, and emotional conflict, to Copa Cabana Estate in Lokogoma, Abuja, where wealth hides a disturbing secret. It also takes readers to Gurbi in Jibia Local Government Area of Katsina State, where ordinary villagers face the frightening reality of kidnapping and armed violence. Beyond Nigeria, the narrative reaches Dubai and Canada, introducing characters whose wealth, fame, family histories, and personal problems broaden the scope of the story.

These contrasting locations give the novel a wide social landscape, allowing the narrative to move between village life, wealthy urban households, international success, family tension, and dangerous hidden circumstances.

Core Themes

Family Expectations

One of the strongest themes is the pressure children experience when trying to satisfy their parents. Salma's struggle demonstrates how damaging constant comparison can become, especially when a child desperately wants recognition but continually feels overlooked.

Education and Identity

Salma's difficulties with school raise questions about whether academic performance should determine a child's worth. Her inability to understand her studies does not mean she has no potential, but the expectations surrounding her make her feel as though failure is her identity.

Secrets Behind Wealth

Salman's life introduces another important theme: appearances can hide realities that outsiders cannot see. His wealth, attractiveness, and privileged lifestyle create one image, while his private struggles suggest something entirely different.

Fear and Insecurity

The events in Gurbi show how quickly ordinary life can be disrupted by violence. The villagers are forced to confront the possibility that danger can enter their community without warning.

Love, Marriage, and Motives

The novel also questions what people truly seek when they pursue marriage. Jasmin insists that she loves Salman, but Fahad believes his wealth and appearance are the real reasons for her attraction. Salman's previous failed marriages add another layer to the question of whether love alone can survive difficult circumstances.

Change

At the heart of the novel is the idea suggested by its title. Sauyin Yanayi, meaning Change of Circumstances, points toward lives that may not remain as they currently are. Salma's situation, Salman's secretive existence, Faruk's return to Nigeria, and the danger facing Gurbi all suggest that significant changes are approaching.

Key Characters

Salma

Salma is a young woman struggling academically while carrying the emotional burden of wanting her father's approval. She is sensitive, easily affected by the conflict around her, and determined to find a way to succeed despite feeling incapable of meeting her family's expectations.

Abba

Abba is strict, uncompromising, and deeply committed to education. His harsh approach creates much of Salma's emotional struggle, although his determination appears to come from his belief that education is essential for his children.

Hajiya

Hajiya is Salma's emotional refuge. She understands her daughter's difficulties and sympathizes with her struggle. However, her disagreement with Abba over Salma's future places her directly in the middle of the family's recurring conflicts.

Salman

Salman is wealthy, attractive, independent, and constantly moving between countries. Yet beneath his polished exterior lies a troubling condition that has affected his relationships and marriages. His character carries one of the story's strongest mysteries.

Momy

Momy is one of the most secretive figures introduced so far. Her knowledge of what happens around Salman, particularly her reaction to the snake, immediately raises questions about what she is hiding and why she is so determined to protect the secret.

Kande

Kande becomes an unwilling witness to something she was never supposed to discover. Her fear and confusion allow readers to experience the mystery surrounding Salman through the eyes of someone who has suddenly found herself dangerously close to the truth.

Faruk Galadima

Faruk is a successful musician and technology enthusiast living in Canada. Despite achieving international recognition, he remains closely connected to his mother and retains a strong attachment to Nigeria. His return may introduce a new direction to the unfolding story.

Nanah and Inna

Nanah and Inna represent the ordinary people caught in the uncertainty surrounding Gurbi. Their fear during the attack reveals the human consequences of the violence affecting their community.

Analytics and Insight

The opening episodes deliberately create several parallel storylines rather than immediately revealing how the characters connect. Salma's family conflict establishes the emotional foundation of the novel, while the events surrounding Salman introduce mystery. The Gurbi storyline supplies immediate physical danger, and Faruk's introduction expands the narrative into the world of celebrity, wealth, technology, and international living.

One of the most intriguing structural elements is the contrast between visible problems and hidden problems. Salma's struggle is visible to everyone in her household, yet nobody seems able to understand what she is truly experiencing. In Salman's world, the opposite appears to be happening. His outward life looks enviable, while something disturbing remains concealed underneath it.

The story also creates several unanswered questions that can drive readers deeper into the novel. Why does Salman suffer from his mysterious condition? What exactly does Momy know? Why was the snake hidden beneath the bed? Will Salma eventually prove herself to Abba? What will happen if the kidnappers return to Gurbi? And what awaits Faruk when he finally returns to Nigeria?

These unanswered questions are what give the opening episodes their suspense. Instead of resolving everything immediately, the narrative leaves clues scattered across different characters and locations, encouraging readers to continue in search of the connections.

A Quote to Remember

“Sometimes the person who longs most for change is the one everyone has already decided will never change.”

This captures the emotional atmosphere surrounding Salma while also reflecting the wider direction of the novel. Every major character appears to be standing at the edge of a turning point, even if none of them yet understands what is coming.

Why Readers Will Want to Continue

Sauyin Yanayi does not present its mysteries all at once. It gradually introduces emotional conflicts, family disagreements, hidden secrets, dangerous encounters, complicated relationships, and characters whose lives appear separate but may eventually intersect.

Salma wants to be understood. Salman wants to escape the consequences of a condition he cannot simply wish away. Momy wants a secret buried. The people of Gurbi want safety. Faruk wants to return to a country he still considers home.

But circumstances rarely remain still.

And as the lives of these characters begin moving toward their next chapter, the question is no longer whether things will change. It is what those changes will cost them when they finally arrive.
